I wish to extend my warm welcome and felicitations to the Thai community, our Filipino friends and distinguished fellows, ?Friends of Thailand? gathering here tonight as the Kingdom of Thailand graciously celebrates the auspicious occasion of the 82nd Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Tonight?s event, apart from the main exhibition to honour the works of His Majesty the King in the areas of rural development, protection of environment and sufficient economy, our guests can find the Thainess atmosphere and hospitality, particularly authentic Thai cuisine, Thai culture and Thai showcase of its achievement in environment campaign.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thailand and the Philippines have long-standing ties as we share deep friendship and dynamic relations anchored on many common values. Over the past years, we have continuously worked together to strengthen our partnership bilaterally and regionally.

Recently, the Royal Visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in Manila from 15-18 November 2009 further attested to the continued cooperation between our two countries as the visit serves as the highlight of the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of our Diplomatic Relations this year. During the royal visit, Princes Sirindhorn upon the invitation of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) presided over the 6th International Rice Genetics Symposium as IRRI celebrates its 50th anniversary and to mark the 10th anniversary of the royal patronage of King Bhumibol Adulyadej who was invited patron of IRRI. Princess Sirindhorn also visited various Philippine agencies which participated in the common interests of recent advancements and modernization in agriculture technology emphasizing on food security which is regarded as one of the primary source of stability and development in the region.

In the same juncture, the official visit of His Excellency Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in Manila on 14 August 2009 reaffirmed our special relations. During the visit, a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Abhisit and President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo wherein discussions on the policy to strengthen our bilateral ties as well as multilateral ties within the context of ASEAN took place.

As we witness the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of our Diplomatic Relations this year, with the support of Team Thailand in the Philippines and cooperation of Philippine authorities, the various activities spearheaded by the Embassy serves as a reminder of our enduring friendship, as we gear for a brighter future together. In particular, our friendship and goodwill activities through cultural and sport diplomacy also reflect in the visit of His Thai Majesty Ships Taksin Maharaj and Bangpakong, the puppet theatre show, Songkran Festival, Thai Food Festival, Thai Cultural Week in Manila, the visit of the group of the former Thai Ambassadors to the Philippines, launching of the Commemorative Book and Commemorative Stamps of the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations Between Thailand and the Philippines, Amateur Muay Thai Competition ?Battle of the Best? and the Seminar on Thai and RP Diplomatic Relations ?Ties Beyond Times? at Chulalongkorn University, to name a few.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the field of sustainable development, Thai investors in the Philippines have expressed firmly their commitment to corporate social responsibility ?returning the benefit to the society and local communities in the Philippines.? Furthermore, by utilizing environment-friendly technology and alternative and clean energy, Thai investments support the Philippine government?s green advocacy on the environment.

Allow me to share with you the success of Thai companies in the Philippines, particularly the innovation of clean energy. The Embassy would like to congratulate the SCG Group on its efforts on environmental consciousness, as witnessed by the awards of 2009 Green Choice to UPPC (United Pulp and Paper Corporation) and Bluesky Award 2009 to Mariwasa Siam Ceramics as decided by the UN to be a Global Top Ten Investment Scenarios to apply new technologies for Renewable Energy Utilization. The Embassy strongly supports the application of alternative energy and clean technology of the Thai companies to the Philippine society, so as to help conserve the environment here.

This year passed not without requiring our joint efforts at overcoming natural calamities that cause much damage to lives and properties. The Royal Thai Government extended its humanitarian assistance to our Filipino friends through Honourable Secretary Ezperanza Cabral of the Department of Social Welfare and Development on November 13 by donating 100,000 kilograms of rice and 50,000 sets of medical aid to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng. Furthermore, the Royal Thai Government will deliver the second lot of Thai rice totalling to 520,000 kilograms which will be arriving in Manila very soon. More importantly, His Majesty the King expressed deep condolences through President Arroyo.

Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, In this special occasion, may I propose a toast to the continued good health and success of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the prosperity of the Republic of the Philippines and the everlasting friendly relationship between the people of Thailand and the Philippines. Mabuhay!
