Relations between the Philippines and Thailand speak of an olden heritage. As historical evidence shows, it appears to have had its beginnings in the 13th century within the larger context of Southeast Asia?s maritime commerce. Archeological and historical records could probably point not only to mutual cognizance of each other?s existence as early political entities (?kingdoms? in Siam, ?rajahships? in the Philippines) but also to a readiness to explore on another?s material culture through trade from that century on.
In light of sixty years of harmonious and warm relations between Thailand and the Philippines, the friendly relationship has been strengthened bilaterally, regionally and internationally, as witnessed under the frameworks of ASEAN, ASEM, ARF, and the UN. In present, the relations are mutually enriching in the political, economic, social, and people to people fields.
Thai-Philippine relations were not just in the parallel and common political experiences. More than these were the initiatives of Head of State and political leaders at the highest levels to symbolize this friendship. In 1963, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit paid a state visit to the Philippines where their Majesties were fitly honored. The University of the Philippines awarded the King the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. While the King was honored at the Philippine Military Academy he exercised the authority to grant absolute pardon for all outstanding cadet punishments. Everywhere the King spoke, he emphasized the long standing relations between Thailand and the Philippines dating back to the fourteenth century. In the sixteenth century one of the
Kings from the Kingdom of Ayuthaya sent two elephants as gifts to Manila, going through a long and hazardous journey. Since then, the visits from various levels and sectors from both sides continue.
On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Thai-Philippine Diplomatic Relations, the Royal Thai Embassy under the leadership of Ambassador Kulkumut Singhara Na Ayudhaya of Thailand, wishes to extend the warm greetings to the Thai community, the City of Manila, the Philippine government, our Filipino friends, ?Friends of Thailand? and ?Friends of the Philippines? as the Royal Thai Embassy in Manila celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Thai-Philippine Diplomatic Relations on 14 June 2009.
The Royal Thai Embassy together with the City of Manila, as a sister city of Bangkok, and the Philippine Government, have organized various activities to promote the long-standing ties of friendship and goodwill between our two countries and peoples. To highlight the event on 14 June 2009, the Embassy will organize series of activities. To name just a few, Wreath Laying Ceremony, Friendship Walk, Thai-Philippine traditional cultural performances, Thai Puppet Theatre show, Muay Thai Competition ?Battle of the best?, Signing Ceremony of the Thai-Philippine Cultural Programme, Commemorative book on the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations, Exchange of Commemorative Stamps, and a Gala Dinner where the group of the Former Thai Ambassadors and the Thai Defense Attache? to the Philippines, the former Filipino Ambassadors to Thailand along with the high dignitaries of the Philippines will join and get together.
These activities through cultural activities and sports diplomacy will not only further contribute to the strengthening of our diplomatic relations but ensure that our special friendship will continue to flourish in the future.
